Spain urges Israel to comply with ICJ order to cease assault on Rafah

MADRID, Saturday, May 25, 2024 (WAFA) — Spain has urged Israel to immediately comply with the International Court of Justice's order to cease its military offensive in Rafah.

Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, wrote on his X account that "the precautionary measures set by the International Court of Justice, including the necessity for Israel to cease its military attack in Rafah, are mandatory measures. Israel must comply with them."

Yesterday, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to immediately halt its military offensive and any further deployment in Rafah province, which could worsen the living conditions of Palestinians.

The court emphasized the necessity of keeping the Rafah border crossing open to enable the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

Additionally, under the provisional measures, the court demanded that Israel, in accordance with its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, take tangible steps to ensure unhindered access for any United Nations investigative or fact-finding committee investigating allegations of genocide without any hindrance.

Spain, along with Ireland and Norway, announced last Wednesday their recognition of the State of Palestine.
