Drought emergency declared northeast of Spain

BARCEOLONA, Thursday, February 1, 2024 (WAFA) - The Catalonia region in northeastern Spain Thursday declared a state of drought emergency in Barcelona and its environs, as the region will now be subject to more stringent water restrictions following three years of little rainfall.

The head of the Catalan regional government, Pere Aragonés, said that the move came after the water level in the reservoirs of the region overlooking the Mediterranean fell to below 16% of their absorptive capacity, which is the threshold set by the authorities to implement a new series of water saving measures that will affect six million people.
