BEIRUT, Friday, January 12, 2024 (WAFA) – Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has underscored the longstanding issue of Israel's failure to abide by international resolutions since 1949, culminating in UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which remains unimplemented.
Mikati, speaking at a government session, emphasized, "We continue to abide by international legitimacy, and our ministerial statement affirms respect for all international resolutions."
Addressing the need for stability in southern Lebanon and the border region, Mikati proposed a comprehensive approach, stating, "If the goal is to achieve stability in southern Lebanon and the border region, let all international resolutions be implemented. Starting with the ceasefire agreement issued in 1949 and all its provisions without any changes, we can then discuss stability arrangements in the south."
Mikati said he conveyed a clear message to international envoys, stating, "We have informed all envoys that talking about calm in Lebanon alone is illogical. Based on our Arab identity and principles, we demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, concurrent with a serious ceasefire in Lebanon. We refuse to have our brothers subjected to genocide and destruction, and we are only seeking a special agreement with anyone."
The Lebanese prime minister hailed South Africa's initiative to file a lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice for committing genocide in Gaza, saying he anticipates a fair and prompt judgment that reflects respect for values and human rights, particularly international humanitarian law.
