NEW YORK, Tuesday, October 24, 2023 (WAFA) - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called today for a “humanitarian ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip.
Guterres said in a briefing before a UN Security Council session on the Middle East and the Palestinian issue that there are clear violations of international humanitarian law.
In order to alleviate this enormous suffering, he said, the distribution of aid must be facilitated in a guaranteed manner, reiterating his call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
Guterres expressed deep concern about the clear violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza, adding that every party to any armed conflict is not above international humanitarian law.
He stressed that nothing justifies the mass killing taking place in Gaza, affirming that the realistic basis for peace and stability is the two-state solution.
Guterres urged for the entry of more humanitarian aid into Gaza after three convoys entered the strip during the past days through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.
He said the aid that has entered Gaza so far is just a drop in the ocean of needs, revealing that the United Nations fuel stocks in Gaza will run out within days, which will be another disaster.
