Presidency welcomes UN vote on resolution calling on ICJ for an advisory opinion on nature of Israeli occupation

RAMALLAH, Saturday, December 31, 2022 (WAFA) - The Palestinian Presidency today welcomed the vote of the United Nations General Assembly in favor of a resolution calling on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to give an advisory opinion on the nature of the Israeli colonial occupation of the land of the State of Palestine, including Jerusalem.

Presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said that the vote “is evidence of the whole world's support for our people and their inalienable historical rights.”

He said in a statement that President Mahmoud Abbas thanked all countries “that stood by the Palestinian right and all parties that worked to make this decision a success.”

Abu Rudeineh said “the time has come for Israel to be a state under the law, and to be held accountable for its ongoing crimes against our people. The world must shoulder its responsibilities and implement the resolutions of international legitimacy, and everyone must stop the double standards.”

He stressed that “the Palestinian leadership will not leave a door without knocking it to protect our Palestinian people. We are now awaiting the International Court of Justice to request a legal advisory opinion on the Israeli colonial regime.”

He said that “resorting to international institutions is a Palestinian right and we will continue to join international bodies and institutions.”

The Presidential spokesman said, "We strongly believe that justice based on international legitimacy resolutions and the absence of impunity is the only way to achieve lasting peace in Palestine, Israel, and the entire region."

The UN General Assembly voted last night on the resolution with 87 states voting in favor, 26 opposed, and 53 countries abstaining.
