JERUSALEM, August 9, 2012 (WAFA) – Israeli right-wing lawmaker Aryeh Eldad Thursday submitted to the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, a draft bill calling to allow Jews freedom to worship in al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites, according to Israeli sources.
The bill calls for allowing Jews to hold prayer at the mosque, located in Jerusalem’s Old City, on specific days while Muslims will be allowed to use it on other days, a situation similar to what is happening at the Ibrahimi mosque (Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron.
Zeev Elkin of the ruling Likud party announced a few days ago that he will strive to allow 'Jews only' access to Al-Aqsa Mosque and bar Muslims from entering it on specific days.
The move has already drawn wide condemnation from Muslim and Arab leaders who fear any change in the status of Al-Aqsa Mosque could trigger serious violence in the region.
