Newspapers Review: Attack on Egyptian Post Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, August 6, 2012 (WAFA) – The bloody attack on an Egyptian border checkpoint in Sinai on Sunday, which left behind 15 Egyptian soldiers dead, dominated Monday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Ayyam reported that Israeli forces killed three of the assailants while Egypt closed Rafah border crossing with Gaza indefinitely and Hamas announced it closed off all tunnels leading in and out of the Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds reported that President Mahmoud Abbas saw off on Sunday the first shipment of the Palestinian humanitarian aid convoy to Syria, which included food and medical supplies. The daily said the shipment will head to Jordan then Syria. It printed a picture of Abbas standing in front of the aid trucks.

The cancellation of the extraordinary ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement Committee on Palestine after Israel had prevented delegates of four countries to enter Palestine was a common theme in all three papers.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations Ron Prosor warning that the Palestinians will receive majority support to their request of a non-member state in the United Nations General Assembly. Nonetheless, it will not bring them a step closer to establishing a Palestinian state, he claimed.

Al-Quds editorial called on the Non-Alignment Movement to respond to the Israeli insult. The daily said the Israeli action reflect its ongoing violation of international law.
