RAMALLAH, February 2, 2010 (WAFA)- Prime Minister Dr. Salam Fayyad stressed, today, the important role that can be played by the European Union during the Spanish presidency.

In his reception of Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, he said that the ministerial statement of the European Union of 8 December, has included the essential elements that emphasize the need to compel Israel to the rules of international law as the occupying power, as well as in the face of unilateral steps occupation, which Israel has sought from which to attempt to impose a fait accompli, particularly in the city of Jerusalem.

PM Fayyad briefed the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs whose counties presides the EU on the latest developments in the internal situation and the political process.

Fayyad considered that the progress in international efforts to revive the peace process and the credibility of the international community, primarily to take concrete steps to compel Israel to the rules of international law and international legitimacy resolutions, especially the complete and total cessation of all settlement activities in occupied territory, including in and around Jerusalem, and to stop invasions, and adherence to the Convention on the transit and movement for the year '2005 '.

He added that this requires the intervention of the international community to compel Israel to the peace process and its fundamental goals of ending the occupation and enable the Palestinian people to self-determination in the independent State of Palestine with its capital East Jerusalem.

For his part, Moratinos reiterated the position of Spain and the European Union, which is a settlement in all its forms is contrary to international law, stressing the need to adhere to the peace process and resolve the two countries.
