LONDON, December 15, 2009(WAFA)- The British Westminster magistrates court issued arrest warrant for former Israeli minister Tzipi Livni over Gaza war crimes accusations was withdrawn when she cancelled the visit.
Westminster magistrates court issued the warrant at the request of lawyers acting for Palestinian victims of fighting in Gaza earlier this year, according to request from Human Rights groups and U.N. investigators.
The British court issued an arrest warrant for Livni yesterday, who is head of the Israeli opposition Kadima Party, She played a key role in launching the offensive war in Gaza Strip. She, as member of the war cabinet during Operation Cast Lead, had been due to address a meeting in London on Sunday but cancelled her attendance in advance.
The Israeli daily Haaretz said Israeli Foreign Ministry on Tuesday called on the British government to end what it called 'absurd situation' in which arrest warrants were being issued to Israeli officials over alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip, warning that “ties between the two countries could suffer as a result.”
In response to the warrant, Haaretz quoted Livni as saying 'I have no problem with the fact that the world wants to judge Israel,. We are part of the free world. The problem starts when the world judges us in a way that gives no value to the region.
