Egypt's FM: Palestinians, Israelis should Decide on Peacekeepers
CAIRO, June 9, 2007 (WAFA) - Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abu el Gheit said on Saturday an international peacekeeping deployment in Palestinian territories should be decided by both Palestinian and Israeli sides.
"The deployment of such forces requires basic elements. If they are fulfilled, then the process will be successful," he said.
Such basic elements involve a cessation of Palestinian infighting, an all-out ceasefire between Palestinian and Israeli sides, and active bilateral negotiations on a final settlement that should envision a Palestinian state, Abu el Gheit said.
"The presence of international peacekeepers on the ground without the so-called political horizons would lead to nothing but to shore up the occupation, he said, noting that Palestinian territorial water and airspace were not under Palestinian control."
He called for establishing an airport and a seaport in Gaza, and opening passages between the West Bank and Jordan for the free movement of Palestinians.
