Egyptian FM Says Unity among Palestinian Sole Choice


CAIRO, June 7, 2007 (WAFA) - Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit said on Thursday that "there is no other choice but achieving unity among the Palestinian people so as not to offer Israel a pretext to shirk its commitments and carry on with its aggression on the Palestinian Territories."

"Cairo is hosting for the Palestinian factions aim at assisting them overcome differences, Abul-Gheit told reporters following talks with the Secretary General of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), Naif Hawatmeh.

He stressed the dire need for concerting all the Palestinian powers to contain the situation and support the unity government for restoring stability in the Palestinian Territories, pointing to Egypt's support to the cause.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister expressed hope for calm at the Palestinian internal scene as "a basic matter." A state of calm with the Israelis will also be necessary, he said referring to demands to the Israelis to take positive measures for improving the Palestinians' living conditions to create a favorable climate paving the way toward final settlement.
