Newspapers Review: Protests marking occupation anniversary focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, June 6, 2020 (WAFA) – Protests in the occupied territories marking the 53rd anniversary of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip and Israeli army crackdown on the protests were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Popular protests denouncing the annexation plan were held on the anniversary of the June 1967 Israeli aggression, said the main front-page headline in al-Ayyam newspaper.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said injuries were reported in the protests against the annexation plan.

Al-Quds said Israeli settlers went on a rampage in the south of the West Bank.

In other news, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Foreign Minister Riyad Malki saying that Palestine has responded to the inquiry by the International Criminal Court regarding being absolved of the agreements with Israel.

They also quoted Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US Congress, warning that Israel’s annexation plans undermines US national security.

Al-Ayyam quoted OCHA saying that Israel demolished or seized 59 Palestinian structures in East Jerusalem and Area C of the occupied West Bank.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said 50,000 Muslims attended the Friday prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque after reopening following more than 70 days of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It said Britain reiterated its opposition to Israeli annexation plans and support for a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Al-Quds said Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh met the Norwegian envoy and talked to the president of the European Council.

It said Israel plans to expand the industrial settlement of Mishor Adumim in the occupied West Bank, adding in another story that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not give the green light to build a settlement on Jerusalem airport land.

The three papers also reported on the protests in the United States against racism and on the funeral of George Floyd, the Afro-American killed by police.

It said that Netanyahu’s wife, Sara, has told her maid to kiss her feet.
