RAMALLAH, Thursday, May 28, 2020 (WAFA) – Israeli demolitions in several Palestinian districts and destruction of agricultural land were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam made these measures their top front-page story while al-Hayat al-Jadida had them lower on the page below a picture showing the destruction left behind from the demolition of a house in the Jordan Valley. Al-Ayyam also had a picture of a demolished house in the south of the West Bank.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted as its main front-page story the statement by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) marking 56 years for its establishment on the upcoming period following the decision to disengage from Israel and the transition from the Palestinian Authority to the State of Palestine.
It also quoted deputy head of Fatah movement, Mahmoud Aloul, saying that President Mahmoud Abbas’ decision to be absolved from the agreements with Israel is an opportunity to get rid of the occupation.
The paper also quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh warning that Israel’s annexation of Palestinian territory will wipe out international law and threaten regional security.
It quoted a Palestinian Foreign Ministry official saying that the International Criminal Court had requested clarification regarding the decision to be absolved from the agreements with Israel.
The other two dailies covered all these topics as well, with al-Ayyam adding that the Israeli army called on its officers to be ready for any escalation on the ground in the occupied territories if Israel goes ahead with the annexation.
It said the Israeli army removed all signs that warn Israelis against entering certain areas in the Jordan Valley.
It quoted an expert on Israeli settlements saying that Israel wants to annex all the settlements and their provinces.
It said the Palestinian private sector refuses to deal with Israel outside the official channels.
Al-Quds said the doors to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem will be reopened for Muslim worshippers as of Sunday. The mosque was closed two months ago in the effort to stop the spread of coronavirus.
It said more than 78,000 students in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip will start their final matriculation exam, the tawjihi, on Saturday after easing the restrictions imposed since the outbreak of coronavirus.
It said eight new coronavirus cases were confirmed yesterday in the Hebron district in the south of the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip.
The paper quoted member of the PLO and Fatah Central Committee, Azzam al-Ahmad, saying that dismantling the Palestinian Authority is considered and “we will not regret it if it does happen.”
