RAMALLAH, Saturday, March 28, 2020 (WAFA) – Mahmiyat.ps, Palestine’s nature reserves website, today called to mark the Earth Hour digitally in light of the exceptional circumstances in the Palestinian territories as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.
The annual global "Earth Hour" event, organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature, falls on the last Saturday of March of each year, and carries this year‘s slogan, "Help highlight the nature - the world is watching." The event aims to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the planet and to start global conversation on protection of nature.
Mahmiyat.ps said that Earth Hour can be celebrated by turning off lights and unnecessary electronic devices at home for one hour at the announced global hour from 8:30 to 9:30 pm, preparing dinner in the dark, reading books in the light of candles and practicing night photography at home, in addition to enhancing environmental awareness by urging protection of the environment and natural resources.
Earth Hour began in 2007, as part of an initiative from the Australian city of Sydney by turning off the lights for an hour with the participation of 2.2 million homes and companies. In 2008, it expanded to include the entire world, and about 50 million people from 370 cities around the world participated.
