Newspapers review: Turkish offensive on Syria, Shtayyeh’s comments on Cairo visit

 

RAMALLAH, Thursday, October 10, 2019 (WAFA) – Turkey’s offensive on the Kurdish-held northern and northeastern Syrian territory and Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh’s comments on his recent visit to Cairo dominated the front page headlines in Thursday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Turkey has launched a large-scale offensive against the Kurdish-held territories in northern Syria.

Al-Ayyam said that Turkey has launched its military operations in northern Syria, displacing thousands of civilians.

The dailies highlighted mass criticism against the Turkish offensive, dubbed the Operation Peace Spring.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Egypt has called for an urgent Arab League’s meeting over the Turkish offensive.

Al-Quds added that the United Nations Security (UNSC) is set to convene today over the offensive, while al-Hayat al-Jadida elaborated that the offensive was received strong condemnation from France, Netherlands and Saudi Arabia.

Premier Shtayyeh’s comments on his recent visit to Cairo also dominated the front page headlines in the dailies.

Shtayyeh was reported describing his visit to Cairo as “successful on all levels” and that it has “opened the door for bilateral cooperation in various fields.”

He was also reported stating that “the needs of our people in the Gaza Strip is a top priority.”

Focusing on the occupied city of Jerusalem, al-Quds said that Israeli settlers call for changing the long-standing status quo on Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Al-Ayyam said that scores of settlers forced barged their way into the mosque compound as Israeli police desecrated the Ban al-Rahma area inside the compound.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida elaborated that settlers stormed the Tankazziya School, located near the mosque compound, where they performed religious rituals.

Jordan’s monarch Abdullah II was reported in al-Quds reiterating his country’s commitment to its religious and historical role in safeguarding the holy places in Jerusalem.

Ramy Abdu of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor was reported in al-Quds slamming Israeli violations in Jerusalem as “ethnic cleansing”.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, the US Department of Education launches a campaign against pro-Palestinian voices on campuses.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted the Central Elections Commission (CCC) remarks on preparations for parliamentary elections, the first to be held since 2006.

They reported CCC Executive Director Hisham Kuheil announcing that CCC is scheduled to start a series of meeting with Palestinian factions and civil society organizations on Sunday in this regard.

According to al-Ayyam, five Palestinian security officers were injured as they were performing their work in Jenin refugee camp.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, a Palestinian citizen of Israel was killed and several others injured, while six vehicles were torched as a result of violent crimes rocking the Palestinian community in Israel.
