Newspapers review: Approval of new settler units in West Bank focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, August 07, 2019 (WAFA) – Israel’s approval of the construction of over 2,300 new illegal settler units in the occupied West Bank dominated the front page headlines in Wednesday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds reported that Israeli occupation authorities approve the construction of 2,604 new settler units in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this regard that Israeli occupation authorities approve the construction of 2,304 new settler units

The dailies said that the dialogue collapsed between Palestinian prisoners and Israeli Prison Service at Ofer Prison near Ramallah.

They added that following the dialogue collapse, six prisoners have gone on a hunger strike.

The latest spate of home demolitions in Jerusalem and Bethlehem districts also dominated the front page headlines.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Israeli occupation authorities demolished two Palestinian houses and several other structures in Jerusalem and Bethlehem districts.

Al-Ayyam elaborated that Israeli bulldozers demolished two Palestinian houses in Jerusalem and the foundations of a house under construction in Beit Jala city, west of Bethlehem.

The dailies said that stone-hurling Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian property in Urif village, south of Nablus.

According to al-Quds, a number of Palestinians suffocated from tear gas fired by Israeli forces in Tammun, south of Tubas, in the northeastern West Bank.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida spotlighted Israeli media reports that Israeli police planted a weapon in the house of a Palestinian in East Jerusalem and then documented its discovery in the course of a TV series on the Jerusalem police force.

Al-Quds said that an Israeli court imposed ILS 1.6 million in fines on the Palestinian Bedouin community of Al-Araqib, which was demolished for the 149th time.

It highlighted a United Nations report concluding that tear gas canisters used to disperse the Great March of Return protestors along Gaza’s frontier with Israel have killed 7,000 protestors and injured thousands.

The dailies said that Israeli ‘Public Security’ Minister Gilad Erdan signed a decision renewing the closure of 26 Palestinian institutions and banning any activities organized by the Palestinian Authority or factions in Jerusalem.

According to al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, President Abbas received Omani ambassador to Jordan Khamis Bin Mohammad Al-Faris at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that Abbas underscored the importance that Oman opens an embassy in Palestine.

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida urging the Netherlands along with other countries committed to the two-state solution to hasten to recognize the State of Palestine.

Regionally, al-Quds reported Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz saying he recently met with a “high ranking persona” from the United Arab Emirates.

Katz was also reported in al-Ayyam saying that Israel is working toward “transparent normalization and signed agreements” with a number of Gulf countries.

Internationally, al-Ayyam said that Palestinian artist, historian and writer Kamal Boullata, who lived in exile for over 50 years, died in Berlin and that his family seeks to bury him in Jerusalem.
