RAMALLAH, Friday, August 02, 2019 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Friday issue on the fatal shooting of a Palestinian man, during a shootout with an Israeli army patrol on the southern Gaza border on Thursday.
They said a Palestinian was shot dead and three Israeli soldiers wounded on Thursday early morning during an exchange of gunfire on the southern Gaza border.
On a different subject, the dailies said the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, declared today that Friday, August 2, is the first day of the Muslim month of Dhu al-Hijjah, meaning that Eid al-Adha (Holiday of Sacrifice) will be on Sunday, August 11.
The dailies said the PLO Executive Committee called on the Arab countries to abide by the Arab Peace Initiative and to stop all forms of normalizing of Israel.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted President Mahmoud Abbas as saying, “If we do not have a good generation and a robust [social] structure, we cannot build our country.”
The three dailies said Israeli warplanes infiltrated Syrian airspace and carried out an airstrike on a location in Quneitra Governorate in the southwest of the country.
The dailies said the Socialist International (SI) reaffirmed after two days of meetings in Ramallah and in Tel Aviv the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and an independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Al-Ayyam said Israeli occupation authorities demolished yesterday the tiny Arab village of Al-Araqib in the Naqab region, southern Israel, for the 148th time in a row.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam quoted the former head of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) Yoram Cohen as saying that “annexing the West Bank could lead to needless bloodshed.”
Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said the United Nations on Thursday appointed a new acting deputy head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), whose top management is under investigation by the UN’s internal watchdog over allegations of abusing their authority.
