Newspapers Review: The new Israeli war on Gaza focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, March 26, 2019 (WAFA) – The new Israeli war on the Gaza Strip last night and this morning was the highlight of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.

While al-Quds and al-Ayyam focused in their main story headlines on the air strikes and shelling of buildings and offices, including the office of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, al-Hayat al-Jadida said in its main headline: “Conflicting reports put the ‘calm’ on quicksand.”

The three papers filled their front page with Israeli and Palestinian reactions to the shelling of Gaza.

In other news, which has also filled the front page of the three papers, US President Donald Trump’s signing a document recognizing the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as under Israeli sovereignty, a move that has generated strong Palestinian, Arab and international criticism, was highlighted in the three dailies.

They also highlighted the situation of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, particularly following the crackdown by the Israel Prison Service against the freedom fighters in the Naqab prison in the south of Israel and the strong official Palestinian condemnation of the Israeli escalation against the prisoners.

The papers also highlighted the strong reaction by several countries against remarks by the Romanian prime minister regarding moving her embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, focusing on the decision by King Abdullah of Jordan to cancel a visit to Romania in protest against these statements and the rebuke by an Italian foreign ministry official of the Romanian remarks who described them as a big mistake.
