RAMALLAH, Saturday, March 23, 2019 (WAFA) – United States President Donald Trump calling for the recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is contrary to international law and a boost to colonialism and the acquisition of territory by force, the Palestinian foreign ministry said in a statement today.
Israel invaded and occupied the Golan from Syria during the June 1967 war and then annexed it in 1981. No country has recognized this Israeli step.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates confirms once again that the Golan is Syrian territory occupied by Israel since 1967, and that the decision to annex it in 1981 is null, void and illegal and that the American and Israeli positions calling for recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan are contrary to international law and constitute a flagrant violation of international legality and its relevant resolutions, in particular resolution 497,” it said.
It strongly condemned these statements considering them “an American-Israeli persistence in perpetuating colonialism and the arrogant attitude of bullying and might, as well as an extension of attempts by the Trump administration to topple the foundations of international order while hijacking and controlling it.
The Foreign Ministry called on all nations that support peace and stability in the region to speak out and unite their efforts to put a stop for the American bias toward the Israeli occupation and its policies, considering it a direct attack on Palestinian and Arab rights recognized by the international organization.
