Newspapers Review: Israeli demolitions, razing roads, expulsion of families focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Thursday, February 14, 2019 (WAFA) – Israeli measures in the occupied Palestinian territory that affect the daily life of Palestinians such as demolition of a home in Bir Onah area of Beit Jala, razing roads in the Masafer Yatta in the south of the West Bank and expulsion of families in the Jordan Valley from their homes for military drills were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Ayyam highlighted these events in its main front page story, printing a picture of Israeli forces destroying a road in Masafer Yatta to prevent Palestinians living in that area from using it.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted as its main front page story a telephone call from President Mahmoud Abbas to residents of Shuhada Street in the Israeli-occupied part of the city of Hebron in the south of the West Bank who were attacked by Israeli settlers to check on their situation.

The three dailies also highlighted the Palestinian factions’ meeting in Moscow in a Russian effort to reconcile the divided political groups, mainly Fatah and Hamas, which Al-Quds said in its main front page story has failed in its mission.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Hamas has prevented Palestinian members of the Borders Authority from reaching Karm Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) terminal with Israel to carry out their work, with al-Ayyam saying the staff refused order from Hamas to take their finger prints and fill personal forms.

Al-Quds also highlighted the American-sponsored Warsaw conference saying the meeting brought differences to the surface and showed the isolation of administration of US President Donald Trump.

It reported on the meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Omani foreign minister on the sidelines of the Warsaw conference saying Hamas has condemned the meeting as “a stab in the back.”

Al-Ayyam said the Warsaw conference is expected to fail in its mission following a boycott by main European parties and the United Nations.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted Saeb Erekat, member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee, saying in a letter to diplomats on the Warsaw conference that implementing international law and resolutions is the only way to have a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

The papers reported on a claim by the Israeli security service, the Shabac, of arrest of dozens of Hamas activists in the West Bank who were recruited from the Gaza Strip through the Hamas satellite TV station Al-Aqsa.

Al-Ayyam said Israel refused to allow UN Security Council representatives on a fact finding mission from coming to the occupied territories.

The papers also said Saudi Arabia has transferred $60 million to the Palestinian Authority as part of its annual commitment to support the Palestinian budget.
