Newspapers Review: Two killed, others wounded at Gaza border protests focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, February 09, 2019 (WAFA) – Two young Palestinians were killed and dozens were injured from Israeli army gunfire in the Friday March of Return protests at the Gaza border with Israel, reported the three Palestinian Arabic dailies in their main front page story on Saturday.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli snipers killed in cold blood Hamza Shtawi, 18, in the Gaza protests who was shot in the neck. The other fatality was 14-year-old Hasan Shalabi who was hit by a live bullet in the chest.

While the Gaza protests occupied half of the front page of the dailies, the papers also reported on the weekly Friday protests in the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem and said that residents of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan held the Friday prayer in a tent in the Bustan area to protest Israeli plans to demolish dozens of Palestinian homes in that area under the pretext they were built without a permit in order turn it into a Jewish park.

Al-Quds said protests were held in Nilin, Kufr Qaddoum and Qalqilya in the West Bank, which were crushed by the Israeli army.

In Ramallah, soldiers raided the center of the city on Friday night and detained a Palestinian who was accused of killing an Israeli woman in West Jerusalem two days earlier.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Saeb Erekat, member of the Palestine Liberation Organization, saying that the Palestinians will not attend the Warsaw conference called for by the United States and planned to open on Wednesday and that no one was delegated to speak on behalf of the Palestinians.

Al-Quds reported that American officials have said that Palestinians were invited to the Warsaw conference. It said the broad outline of the so-called deal of the century may be announced at the Warsaw conference.

Al-Ayyam also reported on these American moves and said that Jarod Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, is going to visit five Gulf states at the end of this month to discuss financing the economic part of his deal of the century.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on the protest at Qalanswa, an Arab town inside Israel, against home demolitions and displacement of Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel.
