Newspapers Review: West Bank clashes, events in Europe focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, August 19, 2017 (WAFA) – The weekly Friday protests in the West Bank against the Israeli construction of settlements on expropriated Palestinian and its annexation wall, as well the tragic events in Barcelona and other European cities were the highlight of the Saturday issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The dailies said a number of Palestinians were injured from rubber-coated metal bullets during protests against Israeli settlements and land grab in the West Bank to build or expand existing illegal settlement.

They said extremist Jewish settlers terrorized Palestinian residents in Hebron when they attacked homes with stones.

Palestinians also held the Friday prayer at demolished homes in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan and the Bethlehem area village of Walajeh, which Israel has annexed and intends to demolish all of its 70 Palestinian homes.

The papers included pictures on their front page of the confrontations and prayers at the threatened areas.

They also printed pictures from Barcelona where an attack left at least 14 people dead and many more wounded, as reported by the three dailies.

Al-Quds said an attack in Finland left two people dead and a third was killed in Germany.

It said in a different story that more than 50,000 Palestinians Muslims attended the Friday prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said all of Palestine’s pilgrims have arrived safely in Mecca for the annual Hajj.

The paper quoted Jordan’s Prime Minister Hani Mulqi saying that normal relations between his country and Israel depend on the investigation into the Israeli embassy incident when a guard shot dead two Jordanian citizens.

Al-Ayyam said Hamas continues to arrest fundamentalists in the Gaza Strip following last week’s suicide attack that left the attacker and one Hamas member dead.

It said Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp was quiet again following armed clashes that left two people dead and eight wounded.
