Newspaper Review: funeral of Palestinian teen killed by Israeli forces focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, June 4, 2017 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Sunday front page issue on the funeral of the Palestinian teen who was shot by Israeli soldiers and later died of her wounds.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that 16-year-old Palestinian teen Nouf Infiat, from the town of Yabad in the Jenin area in the West Bank, who died in an Israeli hospital of wounds sustained on Thursday after being shot by Israeli forces following an alleged stabbing attack, was laid to rest.

On a different subject, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said that Israel invested billions of dollars in building illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, noting that the number of Israeli settlers have increased up to more than 600,000.

A statement by former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak was reported in the three newspapers. He said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is missing out on the historic and final opportunity for peace.

Al-Quds al-Ayyam reported that Qatari government has ordered a number of Hamas officials to leave Qatar’s capital, Doha. The list included names of Hamas members who coordinate with Hamas leaders in the West Bank.

According to the three newspapers, Denmark has stopped funding Palestinian non-governmental organizations for “glorifying terrorism and terrorists.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Fatah-affiliated prisoners in Israeli jails praised the role of President Mahmoud Abbas and the role of Fatah leaders during the “Freedom and Dignity” hunger strike. The strike, which started on April 17 and lasted for 41 days, was a protest against the difficult humanitarian conditions faced by Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

The three dailies said that more than 72,000 Palestinian students in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have begun the final high school exams, known as “Tawjihi.”

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Education, a new “Tawjihi” system has been introduced this year, hoping it will improve exam results as well as students’ chances of passing the exams, the dailies said.
