Newspapers Review: Weekly protests, death of teenager focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, June 3, 2017 (WAFA) – The weekly protests in the occupied Palestinian territories as well as the death of a teenager of her wounds were the highlight of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday.

The main front page story headlines in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said 16-year-old Nouf Infiat, from Yabad in the Jenin area in the north of the West Bank, died in an Israeli hospital of wounds sustained on Thursday after being shot by Israeli forces following an alleged stabbing attack at the entrance to the Israeli settlement of Mevo Dotan.

The two dailies also reported on the weekly protests and said that four people were injured east of Gaza in Israeli army crackdown on the demonstrations demanding an end to the Israeli occupation.

While the third Arabic daily, al-Quds, had also reported on the death of the young girl and the protests, its main front page story headline highlighted the first Friday of Ramadan prayer at al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and said quarter of a million people attended the prayer service.

The two other papers also reported on the influx of Muslims to Al-Aqsa and printed pictures showing the large number of Muslim worshippers there.

Al-Quds said Israel is expected to approve the construction of 2100 new housing units in illegal West Bank settlements.

It said in another story that Palestine’s ambassador to Holland, Rawan Suleiman, invited the head of the International Court of Justice in The Hague to visit Palestine.

It also said that Jordan welcomed the decision by US President Donald Trump not to move the US embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem for the time being.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Minister of Justice Ali Abu Diyak saying that Hamas appointment of a committee to administer Gaza has no legal value because it was issued by a body not legally qualified to issue such decisions.

The papers also said more than 72,000 students in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip start Saturday their Tawjihi exam that qualifies them to enter college.
