Newspapers review: US document of principles for negotiations focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, June 2, 2017 (WAFA) – The formulation of a document of principles for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations on the core issues of a permanent solution by the US administration hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said the US administration considers formulating a document of principles for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations on core issues in consultation with all parties.

The dailies also reported US President Donald Trump signed a presidential waiver delaying the implementation of a congressional decision to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The dailies said the waiver prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express his disappointment, while it was welcomed by the Palestinian leadership.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Presidential Spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh welcoming the waiver as an “important step that would foster the prospects for peace.”

The dailies also reported a Palestinian teen was shot and critically injured by Israeli forces near the entrance of the Israeli settlement of Mevo Dotan in the northern West Bank district of Jenin.

The teen, identified as 16-year-old Nuf Infiaat from the Jenin district village of Yaabad, later succumbed to her wounds. She was shot after she allegedly stabbed and lightly injured an Israeli soldier.   

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli forces surveyed the archaeological area in Sebastia, north of Nablus.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Israeli forces several iron gates and cement blocks that impeded freedom of movement for the Palestinian villages of Sinjil and Silwad in Ramallah district, while they sealed a main entrance to Hebron.

Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah’s meeting with Israeli Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon on Wednesday night in Ramallah also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestinian  government spokesperson Yousif al-Mahmoud stating Hamdallah and Kahlon agreed on expanding the powers of the Palestinian Authority (PA) in Area C and establishing of an industrial zone in the Hebron district town of Tarqumiya.

He was also reported as stating they also agreed on reconsidering the Paris Protocol on Economic Relations.

Al-Quds also reported him they also agreed on opening the Israeli-controlled Allenby border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank for 24 hours a day.

Al-Ayyam reported al-Mahmoud stating Hamdallah confirmed the “importance of focusing on a political solution ]rather than an economical solution[.”

Al-Quds said a number of Palestinian collaborators turned themselves to Hamas’ security services in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported head of the Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs Issaq Qaraqe stating the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) has removed punitive measures imposed on Palestinian prisoners.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestinian Ministry of Transportation announcing it has opened applications for commercial trucks to enter the Gaza Strip from the West Bank.
