Newspapers Review: Provocative Israeli parade in occupied Jerusalem focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, May 25, 2017 (WAFA) – The provocative parade of tens of thousands of flag-waving fanatic Israelis in occupied East Jerusalem, particularly its Old City, marking 50 years for its occupation was highlighted on the front page of the Thursday issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The papers printed pictures of Israeli forces cracking down on Palestinian protesters against the parade, which was described by Amnesty International as a violation of international law and Palestinian rights, according to al-Ayyam.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem and its Old City, which was then under Jordanian rule, during the June 5, 1967 war, annexed it and made it its capital, a step not recognized by any country or organization. The Palestinians say East Jerusalem is going to be the capital of their future state.

The fanatic Israelis escalated as well their provocative tours of the Muslim holy place, Al-Aqsa Mosque, in the Old City in marking this day with al-Ayyam saying Jordan, which has sole custody over the Muslim holy site, has condemned the provocative tours.

The hunger strike of the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, which entered its 39th day, remained a top front page story in the three dailies.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said dozens of the striking prisoners were transferred to hospital, putting emphasis on striking prisoner from East Jerusalem, Samer Issawi, following deterioration in their health.

Al-Quds reported on a secret Israeli plan exposed by the Israeli media regarding two neighborhoods of East Jerusalem. The Israeli government is planning to secede Shufat refugee camp and Kufr Aqab, two all Palestinian neighborhoods separated from the rest of East Jerusalem by a 5-meter high concrete wall, from the Jerusalem municipal boundaries.

The paper said that US President Donald Trump’s plan for Palestinian-Israeli peace assumes normalization of relations between the Arab states and Israel as a prelude to peace.
