Newspapers Review: Trump in Bethlehem highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, May 24, 2017 (WAFA) – The visit of US President Donald Trump to Bethlehem and his meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas were the  highlight of the Wednesday issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The dailies highlighted statements by Abbas saying that the real problem for the conflict is with the Israeli occupation and settlements, and that Palestinian independence is the key to stability.

They also highlighted statements by Trump saying that he will work toward reaching a peace settlement between the Palestinians and Israel.

The three dailies printed photos of Abbas and Trump in Bethlehem and at their joint press conference.

Al-Ayyam quoted presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh describing the Abbas-Trump meeting as important and that Palestinian-American contacts are going to continue in the coming period.

The papers included several stories on Trump’s visit to the area and his meetings in Palestine and Israel.

The prisoners’ hunger strike was also highlighted on the front page of the dailies with al-Quds giving it prominence with a headline that says; “The Israeli government conditions end to strike before negotiating with the leaders.”

It also said the Palestinian cabinet called for more popular support for the prisoners who have been on hunger strike for 38 days.

Al-Ayyam said that the prisoners are going to escalate their struggle, including not drinking water, to force the Israelis to accept their demands.

It said the Hamas authorities in Gaza have indefinitely postponed enforcing the death sentence against the killers of Mazen Fuqaha, one of its military wing leaders.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said in Gaza people go through the garbage looking for food.

It said a Palestinian was shot and wounded by Israeli police in Netanya, northern Israel, for allegedly stabbing a policeman.

The three papers also reported on the terror attack in Manchester, United Kingdom, that left 22 people dead and many more injured.
