Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight Riyadh summit

RAMALLAH, May 22, 2017 (WAFA) – The American-Arab-Islamic summit held in Riyadh attracted the front page headlines and pictures of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Monday.

The dailies reported extensively on the summit and speeches focusing on the call to fight terrorism and plans to create a new coalition of Middle Eastern countries.

The funeral of Fatmeh Taqatqa in Beit Fajjar, near Bethlehem, was also reported on the front page of the dailies. Taqatqa, 16, who was shot and critically injured by Israeli forces two months ago at a settlement intersection after she allegedly rammed her car into settlers, died on Saturday at an Israeli  hospital where she was getting treatment for her fatal guns wounds.

Al-Quds said Israel turned over to Jordan the corpse of Mohammad Kasaji, 57, who was shot dead in Jerusalem’s Old City last week after allegedly stabbing an Israeli policeman outside a gate to Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Jordan had strongly criticized the killing of Kasaji, a Jordanian citizen who was on a visit to Jerusalem.

The hunger strike of the Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons was also highlighted on the front page of the dailies. The strike, in its 35th day, was getting more public support as reports circulated of deterioration in health condition of the striking prisoners.

The three dailies also reported on the Hamas court ruling to execute the alleged killer of Mazen Fuqaha and two other accomplices.

Al-Ayyam said quoting Israel Channel 2 TV that the new US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, jointed settlers in a closed event in celebrating 50 years for the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem.
