RAMALLAH, December 15, 2016 (WAFA) – As the region has been affected by a low pressure cold front, Palestinian detainees incarcerated in the Israeli prison of Etzion have complained about their catastrophic conditions after rainwater flooded their cells, the Palestinian Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission said on Thursday.
The region was hit with a cold front on Monday, which worsened the living conditions of Palestinian detainees held in the Israeli jail of Etzion; heavy rainwater has flooded the cells and prisoners’ beds and clothing were soaked, it said.
The commission’s lawyer, Hussain al-Shaikh, said following an inspecting tour in Etzion that the rainwater leakage was caused by the many cracks in the walls and ceilings of the cells, causing prisoners to go through very difficult conditions due to the extreme cold.
The lawyer stated that the prison administration ignored all complains made by prisoners.
The commission appealed to all human rights and humanitarian organizations, particularly the International Committee of the Red Cross, to promptly intervene and pressure Israel to take the necessary measures to insure the well being of prisoners.
Palestinian prisoners are held in overcrowded cells that lack basic health standards, including the infestation of insects and rats, extreme cold and lack of heating methods.
