Newspaper Review: Abbas Warns Israel about Need to Achieve Peace

RAMALLAH, March 29, 2016 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Tuesday highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas warning Israel about the need to achieve peace before time runs out, during a meeting with the World Federation of Moroccan Jews.

Highlighting his meeting with the Federation’s Chairman Sam Shitrit in Ramallah, Abbas was quoted in the three dailies as warning Israel that “time is running out for peacemaking.”

Abbas was also quoted in al-Hayat al-Jadida as saying: “We must realize peace and bring the [Israeli] occupation to an end.”

The three dailies reported that Israeli forces demolished a number of buildings at the northern entrance of Bethlehem, noting that Israeli soldiers demolished two houses, a metal agricultural structure (barn) and walls and leveled a tract of land at the northern entrance of the city.

Al-Quds reported that Israeli forces is preparing to demolish the family houses of four Palestinians who were killed purportedly following attacks in the Jenin town of Qabatiya.

Al-Ayyam reported that Israeli forces notified villagers of an order to seize large tracts of land belonging to the Salfit village of Masha.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said a 47-year-old Palestinian succumbed to his wounds ten years after he sustained injuries following an Israeli airstrike in Gaza, while a Hamas delegation began a series of meetings with Egyptian intelligence officials in Cairo.

The papers covered the killing of Abed al-Fattah al-Sharif and Ramzi al-Qasrawi, both 21, by an Israeli soldier, identified as Elor Azraya, following an alleged stabbing in the Hebron neighborhood of Tal Rumeida.

It highlighted in this respect a video footage that shows the killer of al-Sharif shaking hands with well-known extremist Jewish settler Baruch Marzel.

It also reported on the findings of an Israeli opinion poll, which shows that 57% of Israelis oppose launching an investigation with the soldier.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to stop handing over the bodies of Palestinians who were shot dead after being suspected of carrying out attacks against Israelis.

Israel’s Chief Sephardic Rabbi Yitzhak Yusef was reported in al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida as saying non-Jews should not be allowed to live in Israel.

He was also reported in al-Quds as saying that if they, ]Gentiles[, don’t agree to take on the Noahide Laws, they should be expelled to Saudi Arabia.

Al-Quds reported on Israeli archaeologist Gideon Suleimani as saying that Israel’s archeological digs are carried out secretly and their goal isn’t scientific, but political-religious.

The United Nation’s Humanitarian Coordinator for the occupied Palestinian Territories Robert Piper was reported in al-Ayyam as warning that the Jordan Valley village of Khirbet Tana was at the risk of “forcible transfer” following a wave of Israeli house demolitions.
