RAMALLAH, July 28, 2015 (WAFA)
– Israeli prison guards Tuesday assaulted prisoner Ahmad Saadat, secretary-general
of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), during a crackdown
on Palestinian inmates in the Israeli Nafha prison, according to a Palestinian
Authority official.
Issa Qaraqe, Chairman of the
Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs, said Israeli prison guards assaulted Saadat
who is serving multiple life sentences in Nafha prison in southern Israel.
Qaraqe warned of the persisting
crackdown on Nafha prison which started on Monday, saying the situation is
heading towards an “explosion” at any moment. He blamed the Israeli authorities
for the assault on both Saadat and other Palestinian prisoners at Nafha.
Meanwhile, Qaraqe said that
Israel’s prisons’ administration transferred 70 Palestinian prisoners from
Rimon prison to Ofer prison near Ramallah.
This came only a day after
Israeli prison guards launched a crackdown on Palestinian prisoners in Nafha
and Rimon prisons. Hundreds of Israeli guards from the Nahshon, Masada, Dror
and Alamaz units of the Israeli Prison Service Monday stormed Palestinian
detainees’ cells in Nafha and Rimon, assaulted many of them and moved others to
other sections.
The Israeli repression unit of
Masada savagely raided section 10 housing Palestinian detainees from the Gaza
Strip in Nafha prison, moving all of them to other sections and ransacking the
content of the cells.
In return, Palestinian
detainees burnt cell number 85 in the old section in Nafha prison, reported the
Palestinian Detainees and Ex-detainees Committee.
The Israeli authorities also
cancelled family visits for prisoners from the Gaza Strip inside the jail
citing “security issues”.
There are around 5,750
Palestinians being held in Israeli jails as of May 2015, according to prisoner
rights groups.
