RAMALLAH, July 28, 2015 (WAFA)
– The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Tuesday highlighted the unlawful murder of
a Palestinian teenager by the Israeli army in the Qalandia refugee camp near
Jerusalem late Monday.
They said an Israeli army force
broke into Qalandia refugee camp in the early morning on Monday and attempted
to arrest 18-year-old Mohammad Abu Latifa. When he managed to escape from the
soldiers, he was shot in the legs before they tracked his blood stains and,
when they detected him bleeding, they shot him in the chest, killing him
instantly.
Al-Ayyam and al-Quds said about
14 Palestinian youngsters were injured with live bullets during confrontations
near Qalandia checkpoint, which erupted in the aftermath of Abu Latifa’s
killing.
The three papers printed photos
of Mohammad’s funeral procession, during which hundreds of Palestinians marched
flying flags and repeating mournful chants.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida
said presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudainah warned that the Israeli
escalation of violence could lead the leadership to take “serious decisions”.
Meanwhile, the three dailies
reported that a state of tension prevailed Monday in the Israeli Nafaha prison,
where Palestinian prisoners are held, after a special Israeli Prison Unit
ransacked section 10 and brutally assaulted the prisoners. The prisoners, in
return, set a room on fire in protest of the Israeli Prison Administration’s
violence.
Covering a different issue,
al-Quds said PLO Executive Committee Chairman Saeb Erekat dismissed media
reports that President Mahmoud Abbas is planning to resign next September.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam
also said Fatah official Azzam al-Ahmad denied these reports, which were
recently circulated in the Israeli media.
Al-Ayyam and al-Quds said the
Israeli government’s ministerial committee approved a proposal by ‘Justice
Minister’ Ayelet Shaked, under which so-called Palestinian “terrorists”
can be convicted even in the absence of witnesses.
Al-Ayyam said Israeli settlers
broke into al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem on Monday, one day after a similar entry
provoked clashes in the holy site, during which dozens of worshipers were
injured.
Al-Ayyam said the UN Special
Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, is concerned
over the recent Israeli escalation in al-Aqsa Mosque.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on
the election of Israeli Knesset Arab Member Ahmad al-Tibi as Deputy Speaker with
a majority of votes.
Meanwhile, the paper said Saudi
Arabia has donated a total of $60 million to support the Palestinian Authority’s
budget.
