Newspapers Review: Palestine Wins First Place in IQ Competition Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, December 21, 2014 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Sunday highlighted two issues; Palestinian children scoring first places in the global Intelligent Mental arithmetic competition in Singapore and Israeli airstrikes of several targets in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted the inspiring news of Palestinian kids securing the first, second and ninth places in a competition which included over 3000 kids from all over the world. Six kids from Palestine participated in the competition; Dania al-Ja’abari in the first place, Ahmad Nashawiyi in the second and Mayar al-Hasis in the ninth place.

The Paper printed a photo of the Palestinian team standing with the golden cups that they have won.

Meanwhile, al-Quds and al-Ayyam front page stories were the airstrikes which targeted a number of locations in the Gaza Strip, a serious escalation which could bring the area into turmoil once again.

Al-Quds reported on the Palestinian factions warning of the possible mounting violence in Gaza and calls on Egypt to intervene.

Though the airstrikes targeted vacant land east of Khan Younes, they are considered the first series of airstrikes since the ceasefire on August 26, 2014, three months ago.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds published stories on the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) overwhelming acceptance of a resolution on a permanent Palestinian sovereignty in the occupied Palestinian Territory (oPT) over natural resources.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida included a news piece on the opening of the Rafah border crossing to allow those who are stuck both in Gaza and in Egypt entry or departure.

The paper highlighted Egypt’s support of the Palestinian bid to the United Nations Security Council submitted Wednesday, which aspires to set a two-year deadline to the Israeli occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.

Meanwhile, al-Quds quoted Secretary of State John Kerry’s request during a meeting with 28 European ambassadors not to support the Palestinian bid to the UNSC under the pretext that such move would increase the power of the Israeli right-wing.

The paper reported on the ongoing and speeding construction of an illegal Israeli settlement in the West Bank, west of Salfit. Besides the construction work in the illegal settlement of Yakir, illegal construction in seven other towns is underway, which only promises to undermine the viability of the two-state solution.
