Foreign Minister discusses EU measures to uphold Palestinian rights with international human rights organizations

MADRID, November 6, 2026 (WAFA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Varsen Shahin met on Friday with representatives of international human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Open Society, and Global Echo, on the sidelines of a symposium titled "Can the European Union Deliver Justice for the Palestinian People?" held at the Spanish Cultural Center.

The meeting explored mechanisms that the European Union could adopt to enhance its responsiveness to Palestinian demands, support efforts to realize the State of Palestine, and uphold the rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to self-determination.

Discussions focused on the obligations and responsibilities of third-party states, particularly regarding bans on importing and marketing colonization products within EU member states, as well as prohibitions on investing in colonies and companies operating within them.

In light of the illegality of colonies established on occupied Palestinian land, participants also examined ways to exert pressure to sever economic and commercial ties and halt agreements linked to colonization activities.

Representatives of the organizations briefed the minister on their mechanisms for monitoring and documenting violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian Territory.

They noted that their reports cover violations committed by the occupying power, colonist terrorism, the establishment of illegal colonial outposts, displacement plans, and other violations across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.
