Fatah says it secured sweeping victory in local elections, calls results public endorsement of its program

RAMALLAH, April 26, 2026 (WAFA) – The Fatah movement said its “Resilience and Giving” electoral lists achieved a sweeping victory in the 2026 local and village council elections, describing the outcome as a public referendum endorsing its political program and national vision.

In a statement, Fatah said it won in the majority of local councils, including in Hebron, Jenin, Tulkarm, Salfit, and Al-Bireh, and formed 197 municipal and village councils by consensus in coordination with national factions and local institutions, including major municipalities such as Ramallah and Nablus.

The movement said the results mark a qualitative shift in the path of Palestinian democracy, adding that 2026 represents a “year of Palestinian democracy” launched by President Mahmoud Abbas. It noted that the local elections will be followed by Fatah’s eighth conference next month and Palestinian National Council elections scheduled for November.

Fatah cited a voter turnout of around 53.5%, according to the Central Elections Commission – Palestine, describing it as consistent with previous elections and a sign of continued public engagement and rejection of boycott calls.

The movement also pointed to voting in Deir al-Balah as significant, saying it marked the first time since the Hamas coup in 2007 that Palestinians in Gaza participated in elections, framing it as a reaffirmation of Palestinian unity.

Fatah said the elections reflect public resilience in the face of political and economic challenges, and reaffirm commitment to democratic processes as part of the broader national struggle.
The movement concluded by thanking Palestinians for their support of its candidates and electoral lists.
