RAMALLAH, November 9, 2025 (WAFA) – The Israeli occupation army has killed 44 Palestinian journalists inside displacement tents in the Gaza Strip, among a total of 254 media workers killed since the start of the Israeli aggression on the Strip in October 2023 through the end of October 2025, according to documentation by the Freedoms Committee of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate.
The Freedoms Committee report examined the incidents and consequences of the targeting and killing of 44 Palestinian journalists inside displacement tents during the Israeli aggression on Gaza. The findings are based on verified data and documented events, including the shelling of journalists’ tents near hospitals and UNRWA shelters, as well as direct sniper fire in displacement areas.
The report highlighted that the Palestinian media sector has faced a series of systematic attacks targeting its infrastructure, including the destruction of offices and media institutions, the targeting of journalists in their homes and bedrooms, and the killing of journalists inside their temporary tents, which they were forced to use following their forced displacement. These tents, set up near hospitals and schools, were considered the last safe havens for journalists.
The report confirmed that targeting civilian journalists constitutes a war crime under Article 79 of the First Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions. It further stated that attacks on displacement tents near hospitals and schools constitute a grave violation of the protection afforded to humanitarian zones, noting that no military activity was present in the targeted tents, thereby nullifying any justification of “erroneous” targeting.
The report highlighted that the use of highly precise weapons and the targeting of areas densely populated with journalists and displaced persons demonstrate deliberate intent, with objectives extending beyond killing individuals to silencing witnesses and undermining the capacity for documentation.
The report called for the establishment of an independent international commission to investigate the deliberate targeting of journalists, the activation of International Criminal Court mechanisms to examine war crimes against them, and the internal protection of journalists through the creation of safe corridors and secure displacement sites.
It also urged engagement with international organizations, including UNESCO and the International Federation of Journalists, to provide urgent support and protection, as well as comprehensive documentation of all cases in a legal database accessible for judicial proceedings.
