MADRID, September 12, 2025 (WAFA) – Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares summoned the Israeli chargé d’affaires in Madrid on Friday in response to a recent statement from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding Spain.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the minister called in Dana Erlich, currently Israel's senior diplomat in Madrid, “to firmly reject the false and offensive statements issued by the Israeli Prime Minister’s office.”
The Netanyahu office, in a post on X on Thursday, accused Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of making “threats of genocide” against Israel, referring to Sánchez's announcement on Monday of new measures affecting arms and fuel shipments to Israel.
Sánchez justified the actions by saying that Spain lacks nuclear weapons, aircraft carriers, or large oil reserves to exert pressure on Israel to halt the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
