Aboul Gheit: Israel is the "root of tension in the region

ISTANBUL, June 21, 2025 (WAFA) – Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, declared on Saturday that Israel is the root cause of tension and instability in the Middle East.

Speaking during the 51st session of the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states, Aboul Gheit emphasized the critical and delicate situation in the region, according to a statement from the Arab League.

“The region is going through a very critical phase. I will continue to repeat this glaring truth, which supporters of Israel try to avoid or obscure: occupation is the root of tension and instability in the region, and the price of continued occupation is these horrific atrocities,” he said.

Aboul Gheit stressed that war criminals remain ready to drag the region and the world into more violence, bloodshed, and hatred to implement plans of ethnic cleansing and the elimination of the Palestinian cause, as they delude themselves.

He further noted, “The severity and gravity of events will never divert our attention from the main issue—the Palestinian people, who continue to face the daily crimes of occupation.”

Highlighting the ongoing Israeli aggression, Aboul Gheit stated, “In just one day last week, 140 Palestinians were killed near food distribution centers that have turned into deadly traps, exacerbating the tragedy of deliberate starvation, a weapon that violates all laws of war, as well as humanitarian norms and ethical charters.”

He also condemned the use of veto power, particularly by Washington, to block a recent UN Security Council resolution aimed at stopping the genocide in Gaza, describing it as enabling occupation forces to commit further crimes.

The Arab League Secretary-General concluded by underlining the urgent moral, humanitarian, religious, and political necessity to save the Palestinian people from ongoing crimes.

“Leaving the reins to extremists and those obsessed with violence and shows of force will only drag the region into a catastrophic disaster, the price of which will be paid by future generations,” he warned.
