UN chief Guterres refers ICJ’s opinion to General Assembly

RAMALLAH, Thursday, July 20 2024 (WAFA) – The United Nations said that its Secretary-General, António Guterres, is set to refer the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to the General Assembly, which requested the court’s advice on procedures related to the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.

A statement issued by the United Nations in Guterres' name last night said, "It is up to the General Assembly to decide how to move forward in this matter."

Guterres stressed the need for "the parties to re-engage in the long-awaited political path towards ending the occupation and resolving the conflict in line with international law, relevant United Nations resolutions and bilateral agreements."

He said, “The only viable path is to see two states - Israel and a fully independent, democratic, contiguous, viable and sovereign Palestinian state - living side by side in peace and security within secure and recognized borders, on the basis of the pre-1967 lines, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states.
