UK restores funding to UNRWA, pledges £21M in new funding to the agency

LONDON, Friday, July 19, 2024 (WAFA) - The United Kingdom (UK) announced today that it has restored funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and pledged an additional £21 million (approximately $27 million) in new funds to the relief agency.

"We are reversing the decision to suspend funding to UNRWA", British Foreign Secretary David Lammy told the House of Commons, adding that the UN relief agency is "absolutely essential" to providing humanitarian aid to the besieged and devastated Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli aggression for over nine months. The UK paused funding for UNRWA in January.
