EU High Representative stresses EU's refusal to label UNRWA as a "terrorist organization"

BRUSSELS, Monday, July 15, 2024 (WAFA) - The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, stressed the EU's refusal to describe the United Nations Relief Agency (UNRWA) as a "terrorist organization.”

Borrell said the EU will continue to work with donors to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

This came during a joint press conference with Jordan's Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, and European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Várhelyi, on the sidelines of the 15th Meeting of the EU-Jordan Association Council in Brussels.

Borrell said: "We reject the designation of UNRWA as a terrorist organization, and we will continue to support it, along with donors, and emphasize the importance of partnership between Jordan and the European Union at various levels.”

In May, the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) approved, in the first reading, a draft law labeling UNRWA as a “terrorist organization.”

The Knesset's move comes after most Western countries reinstated funding for UNRWA after Israel failed to prove its severe allegations against the UN relief agency.
