CAIRO, Friday, May 10, 2024 (WAFA) – Egypt today welcomed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution backing Palestine’s bid to become a full UN member.
Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed in a press release passing this historic resolution as an embodiment of a historic reality on the ground and a recognition of the rights of a people that have suffered from occupation for over seven decades.
Commenting on the timing of the resolution, the Ministry stated that the resolution was passed at a time when the Palestinian cause was going through a delicate and critical stage given unprecedented Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people and their rights.
It called on all states that have not decided to recognize the Palestinian state to take such a pivotal step in support of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people’s rights.
Meanwhile, Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the UNGA adoption of a resolution, endorsing Palestine's request for additional privileges and full membership in the organization.
Jordan News Agency (Petra) reported the Ministry spokesperson, Sufian Qudah, saying that the resolution's adoption by a majority of 143 votes reflects an international consensus on the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the embodiment of their independent and sovereign state on the lines of June 4, 1967, as well as the State of Palestine's right to full membership in the UN, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Qudah emphasized the points made in the UNGA’s recommendation that the Security Council take up Palestine's application for membership in the organization right away and called on the international community to step up its efforts to put an end to the Israeli occupation and find a fair, long-term, and peaceful resolution to the Palestinian issue that complies with international law and UN resolutions. as well as relevant references from other countries and the Arab Peace Initiative.
