NEW YORK, Monday, December 18, 2023 (WAFA) - The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on a new resolution presented by the United Arab Emirates later this evening concerning the situation in Gaza.
However, the vote, which was anticipated at 20:00 GMT, has been officially postponed to 22:00 GMT and might be delayed further, possibly until Tuesday, according to diplomatic sources cited by Agence France-Presse.
The new resolution calls for an "urgent and sustainable halt to hostilities" in Gaza and urges the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to the war-torn region.
On December 9, the United States exercised its veto power against a Security Council resolution calling for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza.
On December 12, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on the matter with a majority of 153 votes out of 193 member states, while ten countries voted against, and 23 abstained.
The UN Security Council has been facing severe criticism since the onset of the Israeli aggression in Gaza on October 7 for its failure to adopt a resolution mandating a ceasefire to end the Israeli genocide.
