GENEVA, Saturday, October 14, 2023 (WAFA) – UNICEF Spokesperson James Elder has drawn attention to the hard situation faced by Palestinian children in Gaza, as the Israeli aggression continues to exact a devastating toll on the youngest and most vulnerable, calling for an immediate ceasefire to stop the humanitarian crisis.
"Hundreds and hundreds of children have been killed and injured. Every hour in Gaza, the number of children killed rises. The killing of children must stop," said Elder in a press statement.
Elder painted a grim picture of the injuries children are enduring: "The images and stories are clear: children with horrendous burns, mortar wounds, and lost limbs. And hospitals are utterly overwhelmed to treat them. Yet the numbers keep rising."
Elder expressed UNICEF's concern about the safety of the 1.1 million people, nearly half of whom are children, who have been ordered by Israel to evacuate their homes ahead of an expected ground assault.
"Children and families in Gaza have practically run out of food, water, electricity, medicine, and safe access to hospitals, following days of air strikes and cuts to all supply routes," he warned.
He continued, "Most residents can no longer get drinking water from service providers or household water through pipelines."
