Newspaper Review: Israeli killing of Palestinian teen focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, August 8, 2023 (WAFA) – News about the Israeli killing of a Palestinian teen near Ramallah have hit the front pages of the three Arabic Palestinian dailies on Tuesday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said that a 17-year-old Palestinian youth shot and critically wounded near the town of Silwad, east of Ramallah, a few days ago has died of his wounds.

The dailies added that the youth, identified as Ramzi Fathi Hamed, was shot by a settler when he was in a car near the settlement of Ofra. Medics said the youth died of a severe pulmonary attack while getting treatment at a Ramallah hospital after he was shot by two bullets in the chest and belly.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that President Mahmoud Abbas phoned the family of the slain teen and offered his deep condelences.

Al-Ayyam said that Israeli authorities are studying 28 settlement construction plans in the occupied West Bank, according to PeaceNow movement.

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh Monday met with a delegation of members of the US Congress, which included 22 members of the Democratic Party, headed by Senator Hakeem Jeffries, leader of the Democratic Caucus in the House of Representatives, in his office in Ramallah, as reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida.

The meeting discussed ways to revive the political process and the role of the US Congress in protecting the two-state solution, as the Prime Minister called on Congress to vote in favor of recognizing the State of Palestine.

Al-Ayyam said that four Syrian soldiers were killed and four others were wounded in an Israeli air strike on the outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The paper said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Bloomberg News that he wouldn't give the Palestinians "any powers to threaten Israel."
