Newspapers Review: President’s remarks in Cyprus, EU resuming aid to Palestinians focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, June 15, 2022 (WAFA) – The visit by President Mahmoud Abbas to Cyprus, his meetings there and remarks he made, as well as the European Union announcing the resumption of financial aid to the Palestinian Authority, were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

The three papers – al-Quds, al-Ayyam, and al-Hayat al-Jadida – highlighted a statement by the President in which he said that “we will do what is necessary in legal measures to protect the interests of our people and stop the crimes of the occupation.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that the President also said that the current situation cannot be tolerated in the absence of a political horizon and international protection.

On the other main topic, the EU aid, the three dailies quoted the President of the EU, Ursula von der Leyen, telling Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh that all financial aid will be dispersed as soon as possible after all hurdles have been removed from its way.

Al-Ayyam said US President Joe Biden will visit Palestine, Saudi Arabia and Israel in the middle of next month and he will take part in a regional Arab summit in Jeddah.

The three dailies also reported on the Israeli violations in the occupied territories, including settlers’ violence and uprooting of trees, army incursions and arrests in several West Bank governorates.

Al-Quds quoted Human Rights Watch saying that Gaza is a big prison.

It also said that most Arab countries invited by Israel to participate in the Jewish games called the Maccabiah Games have rejected the invitation.

Al-Ayyam quoted the Israeli minister of religious affairs saying peace with the Palestinians is not possible in the near future and that if he could make the Arabs disappear with the push of a button, he would push it.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Hussein al-Sheikh, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization, met separately in Ramallah with a US and a French delegation.

Al-Ayyam said Palestine and Italy signed six agreements worth €17 million.
