Newspapers Review: Jerusalem and settlers’ provocations in the holy city focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Thursday, April 21, 2022 (WAFA) – The latest heated events in occupied East Jerusalem and last night’s provocations by Israeli settlers and fanatics that almost caused an all-out conflict were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

The headlines in the three dailies said that Palestinians in Jerusalem confronted the settlers’ provocative “march of flags”.

Al-Ayyam daily said many Palestinians were injured and detained when assaulted by the Israeli occupation forces following the provocative march by the settlers.

It said Israel has declared a two-day closure on the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip starting tonight until Saturday night.

Al-Quds daily said an official American delegation has arrived in the region to discuss ways to de-escalate the situation in Jerusalem.

It said setters have broken into several archeological sites in the West Bank under army protection where they held religious rituals.

The third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, said President Mahmoud Abbas and his Algerian counterpart discussed the latest developments in Jerusalem.

It also quoted the presidential spokesman rejecting statements by the Israeli premier describing them as misleading and contradictory to the United Nations.

It said Israel insists on restricting freedom of worship in Jerusalem by restricting the number of worshippers who can attend Holy Fire on Saturday at the Holy Sepulcher Church in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said the Israeli High Court is expected to issue a ruling on this matter in the next few hours following an appeal by the Greek Orthodox patriarchate.

Al-Quds also quoted the UN chief stressing the need to end all unilateral measures that undermine the two-state solution.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Palestine and Germany signed an agreement to build two solar power stations in the Gaza Strip.

It quoted Amnesty International reiterating its description of Israel as an apartheid regime.

It said 3000 US citizens have signed a petition calling for an end to Israeli aggression in occupied East Jerusalem.
