Newspaper Review: President celebrates Bethlehem as Capital of Arab Culture

RAMALLAH, Sunday, April 11, 2021 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic-language dailies focused today on remarks made by President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday as he announced the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank as the Capital of Arab Culture.

In bold black, the dailies quoted the President as saying: “We’ll continue our national struggle to achieve justice, dignity, freedom and the embodiment of our independent state.”

The dailies said that the Palestinian Government announced a new set of easier restrictions and arrangements over the COVID-19 pandemic during the upcoming holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The dailies said 1502 new coronavirus infections and 26 deaths were reported in Palestine yesterday.

Al-Ayyam said dozens of Palestinians sustained suffocation from teargas as Israeli occupation army attacked a protest against Israeli settlements in the town of Kafr Qaddum, near Qalqilia in the occupied West Bank.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said the Russian Foreign Ministry urged today all parties to abandon actions that could undermine the successful completion of the upcoming elections in Palestine, or which otherwise undermine the prospects of reviving the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

Al-Ayyam quoted a US official speaking on condition of anonymity as saying that the resumption of US aid to Palestine was a gesture of goodwill in the way to resuming Palestinian-US relations.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Palestinian National Council, the Palestinian parliament in exile, urged world parliaments to pressure the Israeli occupation’s government to allow Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem to cast their votes in the upcoming Palestinian elections.
