Newspapers Review: Ongoing Israeli repression of Palestinians highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, January 05, 2021 (WAFA) – The daily Israeli repression of Palestinians in the occupied territories was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily said in its main front-page story headline that the Israeli occupation has escalated its repression, demolition and detention of Palestinians as settlers have also escalated and expanded their rampage in the West Bank.

Al-Quds said on this subject that the occupation and the settlers have escalated their aggression in different parts of the West Bank.

It said in a report by its correspondent in Bethlehem that the so-called Youth of the Hills, a paramilitary Israeli settler terror group, is the arm of the Israeli right-wing and the occupation in stealing the land and settlement activities.

The third daily, al-Ayyam, said two Palestinians were injured by Israeli occupation army bullets in a Jericho refugee camp while demolitions and destruction of land was taking place in several districts.

It said Israeli soldiers broke into Thabet Thabet Hospital in Tulkarm where they threw four concussion bombs inside its halls causing panic and concern among staff and patients.

It also said that an Israeli court has ruled in absentia in favor of evicting a Palestinian family from its property in Silwan neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem in favor of Israeli settlers.

The paper also quoted the Israeli human rights organization, B’Tselem, saying that Israel demolished 729 Palestinian-owned structures and killed 27 Palestinians in 2020.

Coronavirus in Palestine, the region and the world was also highlighted on the front page of the three dailies, which said that 20 people have died of the disease yesterday and 1009 new cases were recorded in Palestine.

Al-Ayyam quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh saying that his government is trying to get the corona vaccine as soon as possible.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the cabinet approved the health insurance plan for the handicapped.

It said that a man killed his mother in the northern West Bank city of Jenin.

It published a story revealing the party that is responsible for the disappearance of the paintings by the Palestinian cartoonist, Mohammad Sabaneh, from the halls of the International Criminal Court in The Hague a year ago. It said an employee of court has removed the paintings for political reasons.

The main front-page story in al-Quds daily, which filled three-quarters of its front page with obituaries for dead people, highlighted the Saudi-Qatari agreement on reopening their borders and that the Emir of Qatar was invited to attend the Gulf summit in Saudi Arabia today.
