BRUSSELS, Wednesday, November 11, 2020 (WAFA) – The Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats in the European Parliament today cabled President Mahmoud Abbas condoling him of the death of Palestine Liberation Organization official Saeb Erekat.
"On behalf of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization," said members of the European Parliament Iratxe García Pérez, S&D Group President, Kati Piri, S&D Group Vice-President, and Evin Incir, EP Standing Rapporteur for Palestine on behalf of the Group.
"Dr. Erekat persistently fought for the Palestinian people, its right for self-determination, an end to occupation, and the dream of a two-state solution, recognizing the right to live in peace and security of both Palestinians and Israelis.
"With wisdom, foresight and diplomacy, he remained committed to the peaceful negotiations and settlement of the conflict with Israel, and served greatly as the Palestinian chief negotiator for more than two-and-a-half decades.
"His legacy and deeds are far-reaching, and he leaves a huge gap in the struggle towards peace. He will forever be missed, but we continue his work for a Palestinian state and for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East," they wrote.
"We honor his legacy and deeply mourn his loss alongside his family and our friends, the people of Palestine."
